BIO
Rebecca O’Brien is an award-winning filmmaker and AACTA and ADG nominated director whose recent work includes directing on the hit Stan Original Series Bump, she directed eight episodes across the last three seasons of the acclaimed Stan Original Series Bump, including the series finale, helping guide the award-winning drama through its evolution into one of Australia's most beloved television shows.
She also directed on ABC TV’s Austin, an offbeat comedy starring Michael Theo, further cementing her reputation for crafting emotionally resonant and tonally nuanced television.
Currently, Rebecca is developing two major scripted projects: Wattle Creek, with Bump creator Kelsey Munro and comedian/writer Steph Tisdell (Class of '07, Total Control), and Hive, a sci-fi adaptation of A.J. Betts’ award-winning YA novels, in collaboration with actor/writer Joelene Crnogorac.
A graduate of AFTRS and a recipient of Screen Australia’s Talent Escalator and the ADG’s Shadow Directing program, Rebecca’s earlier work spans projects for Aquarius Films, ABC, NBCUniversal, and Roadshow Rough Diamond. Highlights include The Great Dark, The Gathering, and her first television episode for Netflix’s The Unlisted, which earned her a 2020 ADG nomination.
Her early career highlights include producing and directing on the historic 50th-anniversary episode of Play School; which was nominated for an AACTA award, executive producing the film adaptation of Jasper Jones by Craig Silvey, and shadowing director Michael Rymer on the Emmy-winning Battlestar Galactica.
Rebecca is passionate about the collaborative nature of filmmaking, embracing the synergy of talented teams working toward a shared vision. Her directing approach is intuitive and intentional and showcases her affinity for raw, character-driven narratives with emotional depth. She is driven by a belief in the power of storytelling to challenge, move, and connect audiences.
